Army to build vocational training centre at Homagama

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Sri Lanka Army Engineer Services Association is to commence its Rs.54 million building project to accommodate a fully fledged Vocational Training Centre at Homagama to mark their 8th anniversary which falls on January 24. The Annual General Meeting will be held at the Ex- Servicemens Association at Bristol Street Colombo on Saturday.

President of the Engineer Services Association, Brigadier Asoka Perera said that plans and the Bill of Quantities have already been prepared for the project.

The association completed a building costing Rs 700,000 on a 30 perch land at Homagama in 2002 with the assistance of the Army Commander Lt General Lional Balagalla, well-wishers and members of the association.

The Vocational Training Authority has given the approval for this building for a Vocational Training School to conduct courses in Carpentry, Masonry, Plumbing, Electrical and Aluminium Fabrication from that year and the association is now planning to upgrade these facilities for the benefit of its members and their dependants.

A large number of students have completed courses and some of them have found employment as a result.

One of the prerequisites of entry to follow courses is that the student should be a child of an ex-serviceman who satisfies the requirements for entry. Any shortfall in entry is requested from outsiders only after giving priority to those.

Brigadier Perera pointed out that at a time the country needs skilled youth for the job market locally and overseas upgrading this vocational training centre is very important. He hoped that members living abroad together with well-wishers will assist in this effort in the future too.

The association has helped immensely to its destitute members by way of cash and kind to build houses, to start self-employment projects and to get medical treatments.
