EDEX 2004 an eye opener for educational opportunities

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The success of the EDEX 2004 higher education fair has convinced us to make it an annual event in future, Project Manager Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pte) Ltd (LECS) Lilantha Jayarathna said.

It created and awareness for parents and students on education and about other facilities such as loans and job opportunities.

There had been nearly ten thousand visitors to see the exhibition over the weekend. "Our objective was to show opportunities available for our students and educate their parents and teachers so that they can guide them on the right career path, Jayaratne said.

The 57 stalls covered a wide area of local and foreign higher study schemes.

We can guarantee their records to a very high extent because LECS was careful to select the institutions which have track records to avoid unqualified stallholders coming in as participants. Most of the foreign principals were here for the exhibition," he said.

The Academy of Design stall was uncommon among others and showcased opportunities for higher education in fashion design and Interior Design. It is approved by Edexcel International to offer BTEC HND and First Diplomas in Design, from the UK and is recognised by universities and employers worldwide.

The Academy assured of an internationally trained faculty of experienced professionals, an active job placement service and strong bonds with industry.

The Principal of the Academy, Annette Wendling said that the Sri Lankan market in Fashion Design is growing and students are trained to be in the industry.

The academy's main objective is to instill into the minds of its students conceptual thinking supported by the technical knowledge to enable them to generate meaningful designs and this is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka which fills a great void in the country.

The students have good chances locally and abroad because they become extremely good within four to six years' hard work. Projects completed by senior students and their views were displayed at the stall.

The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) has also signed an MoU with the Southern Queensland University in Australia for MBA programs commencing July this year, Chairman Human Resource Development Committee IPM G. Weeratunga said.

IPM is the current President of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management and has built relationships with international counterparts to expand its avenues to suit global standards.

Asian Aviation Centre, the premier Aeronautical Engineering and Flying Academy in Sri Lanka provides academic, technical and vocational training in aeronautical engineering, aircraft maintenance engineering, flying and computing.

It has three distinct academies under its wing and is affiliated to the Kingston University of UK and Regency Institute of TAFE of South Australia.

The exhibition was organised by the Royal College Union together with LEACS. The LEACS is due to hold this educational fair in the Maldives in April under a different name, project manager Jayaratna said.
