Tribal group blocks road in Bangladesh hills protest CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, Tuesday (AFP) Tensions were high in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts region.as a tribal group blocked roads leading to the area to demand the withdrawal of government troops, officials said. There were no reports of violence on the first day of the 48-hour action, which cut off road links between the port city of Chittagong and the hill districts which border India and Myanmar, the officials said. Troops and police were out in force in the region where rival groups staged separate marches. The road blockades were erected by the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity tribal group which has been demanding the implementation of a December 1997 peace treaty it signed with the government. The pact ended more than two decades of insurgency in the region. The government promised regional councils and a withdrawal of troops to end a two-decade insurgency for autonomy. |
