Lankan's Eight clinch Rifa Cup N.U. Abdul Razzak The Sri Lankan expatriate club in Male' the Lankan's Eight led by the former Dharmaraja captain Channa Wickramasooriya of the Sports Ministry of the Maldives became champions of the 3rd Rifa Cup when they beat the much fancied Club the Bless in the final by 30 runs played at the Mafannu Stadium in Male' recently. Twenty teams vied for honours in the coveted Rifa Trophy of this eight a side tournament organised by the Cricket Control Board of the Maldives for the third conscutive year to promote Cricket in this football dominated country. Invited to bat the Lankan's Eight got off to a flying start as their openers Captain Channa and Tilak played cautiously getting 40 runs for the first wicket. Tilak made a brilliant 58. His power packed half century included 5 sixes and four fours. In chasing a target of 128 off 12 overs the Bless openers found it difficult to get runs as the Lankan's Eight seamers bowled to a accurate line and length. However Bless' one down batsman Ibrahim Asim played a heroic innings making 40 valuable runs. His contribution helped his side get 85 runs off the allotted 12 overs. Indika and Azwer were pick of the bowlers claiming 5 wickets among themselves for the winners. |
