This Alliance comes at an opportune moment when the Muslim settlements in the east are threatened by Tiger terrorists and the government turning a blind eye to the tense situation, a news release from the Federation said."History tells that it was the SLFP-Marxist Alliances that were forged in the past that spoke of the Muslims of our country and Muslim nations. It was the leader of the MEP Government and late Mr. S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike who was the first to speak at the UN General Assembly on the Suez crisis. Sri Lanka at that time came to be known as Bandaranaike country in the Arab world. On the Palestine issue the late Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike under the SLFP left alliance expelled the Israelis out of the country. But the late Mr. J. R. Jayewardene invited them back it must be recalled that when JR's Foreign Minister strongly protested, JR showed him the way out if he did not fall in line. The Muslims at that time had no say in his government. In the recent past when Iraq was invaded by anti-Islamic forces Ranil and his stooges not only kept mum but spoke in favour of the invasion which the peace loving world stood to condemn. It was the SLFP with the JVP youth in the forefront stages protest rallys in Colombo and its suburbs. SLFP-Marxist Alliances in the past have always done more for the Muslims than any other party in power. We appeal to the Muslims of Sri Lanka to join hands with the Alliance and support President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who is the only person who can bring about peace amongst all communities under a united Sri Lanka." |
