He also stressed the importance of representation of a alternative Government (Opposition), too, at the forthcoming talks. The Minister made these remarks at a discussion he had with the Japanese Envoy at his Ministry office in Colombo. Minister Hakeem told the Japanese Envoy although the need for Muslim representation was pointed out at earlier occasions, it was denied. Speaking to the Daily News Minister Hakeem said that he, too, took part at the early peace talks as a Government representative and they discussed problems mainly related to the humanitarian and rehabilitation processes in the North and East. "But with a separate Muslim representation we can discuss several core issues such as resettlement of displaced persons, the system of Government such as Federal or otherwise to be proposed in the Northern areas and also issues related to the power sharing. The Japanese envoy also had a discussion with a team of SLMC Constitutional Committee members. |
