Death of Murali Jayadeva

Murali Jayadeva, a well known freelance journalist of ANCL died at a private hospital in Colombo on Monday. State Counsel Chanaka Jayadeva (31), son of Murali said his father died due to the negligence of the hospital staff. He made this observation while testifying at the inquest held before the Additional City Coroner M. Ashroff Rumy.

Murali Jayadeva (76) resident of Udahamulla, Nugegoda was a father of two. Chanaka Jayadeva said in evidence that his father had contracted diarrhoea on Monday and was admitted to a private hospital and some medical tests were performed but after the tests he had not been given medicine. He died due to the negligence of the hospital staff, he claimed.

The post-mortem was held by the JMO B. E. C. Kulathunga. Evidence was led by PC Chandrasiri of Narahenpita Police.

Two PA supporters killed in Puttalam

Two PA supporters were killed in the Puttalam town yesterday while pasting posters supporting the SLFP-JVP alliance agreement.

Two unidentified men suspected to be UNF supporters had hurled a hand grenade at a small group of PA supporters pasting posters early yesterday, police said.

Four others in the six-member group were seriously injured and rushed to the Puttalam Hospital.

According to Puttalam ASP Jayantha Wekadapola, the two assailants had arrived in a motor bike, hurled the grenade and fled. The PA supporters had arrived in Puttalam town in a tractor with the posters, banners and placards, the ASP said.

Heart patient needs help

Miss K. D. Priyanka Aruni Chandraratne (20) of No. 105, Soraborawewa, Mahiyangana is suffering from an acute heart ailment and Dr. Aruna Kapuruge, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital has recommended urgent heart surgery for repair of ASD to save her life.

`The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 110,000. Aruni says their family is not in a position to foot this bill due to their serious financial plight. She requests philanthropists and the general public to assist her cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to facilitate the surgery and save her life. All contributions should be remitted to account number 7060587-8 at the People's Bank, Mahiyangana branch.
