Promising chemistry students to get schols

The Institute of Chemistry will award "College of Chemical Sciences Silver Jubilee Scholarships" to 29 year 13 students who excelled in the Senior Division at the Australian Chemistry Quiz held in Sri Lanka by the Institute of Chemistry. The ceremony will be held at Vidya Mandiraya, Colombo on January 30 at 9.00 a.m.

Vice Chancellor, Jaffna University, Prof. S. Mohandas will be the chief guest and Royal College Principal, Upali Gunasekera will be the guest of honour.

Prof. J. N. Oleap Fernando, the Sri Lankan Co-ordinator of this contest since it was commenced 7 years ago in 1997 states in a news release that Royal College students can be singled out for performing very well in this competition every year over the past 7 years.

In fact 8 of the 29 best performers in the senior division this year are from Royal College while the rest are from Maliyadeva Boys College, Kurunegala, Rahula College, Matara, Richmond College, Galle, Sacred Heart Convent, Galle, Southlands College, Galle, Taxila Central, Horana, Sri Sumangala Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura, Musaeus College, Ratnavalie Balika, Gampaha, D. S. Senanayake College, Nalanda College, St. Joseph's College and Colombo International School.

Prof. Fernando said that all those students would be following 25-year- old well recognised and highly popular graduateship program organised and presented by the institute absolutely free of charge.

They would be qualified as Graduate Chemists by the year 2008. The status of this program could be assessed from the fact that the institute was for the past 8 years, the largest provider of Graduate Chemists in Sri Lanka, surpassing the output from any of the Sri Lankan universities, he said.

These scholarships were being awarded this year to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the program which was also being commemorated by a conference on "Chemical Education for National Development" to be held at Hotel Trans Asia on April 29 and 30, he said.

Nimeshi Peiris from Methodist College is the sole best performer in the junior division corresponding to GCE (Ordinary Level) students. She together with 22 other good performers from Colombo International School, Royal College, Mahanama College, S. Thomas', Mt. Lavinia, Visakha Vidyalaya, Rahula College, Matara, Maliyadeva Boys College, Kurunegala, Ananda College, Taxila Central, Horana, Richmond College, Galle and Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya will also receive awards in the junior division at the award ceremony.

Any school wishing to participate in this competition which will be held for the eighth time on July 31 is requested to contact the Institute Office at 120/10, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 (Phone 2691298) for further information. Applications will close on 15th February.
