High profile for Dankotuwa Porcelain products in overseas markets

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

Sri Lanka is gaining a good reputation for Dankotuwa porcelain products in the international market and it could match similar products from other sources, Consultant designer of tableware for Dankotuwa porcelain who is in Sri Lanka on a special assignment, Pamela Greeves said.

Through her wide experience working for international companies such as Royal Doulton, Wedgwood, Royal Worcester and Royal Porcelain of Thailand, Greeves has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the need of the international market as well as knowing the intricacies of the porcelain industry.

She designs casual body shapes for Dankotuwa Porcelain which is a leading manufacturer of porcelain tableware. She also does painted designs and stall designing for trade fairs.

An integral part of the creative process in tableware she mainly focuses on designing and decorating more casual and modern specimens that are marketed through the Elan range.

Currently she is working on new designs for the Frankfurt Fair which will open in February this year. This will be the main showcase for Dankotuwa Porcelain which has attracted potential clients from the European markets, Pamela said. She hoped the two completely new shape ranges, square and modern round plates would be in the forefront at the trade fair. USA, UK and Germany have already inquired for these products.

She obtained her Masters Degree in Ceramic Design from Staffordshire University in UK before her first visit to Sri Lanka two years ago as a freelance consultant designer. Commenting on the progress of these products now she said "Sri Lankan products are extremely good, extremely white and using very good raw material, the management is totally aware of all aspects and they are in the forefront in introducing new technology.

Sri Lankan workers she said are very skilled, hard working, flexible and understanding. She pointed out three factors which are required to face the demands of a competitive market, that being design, cost and quality.

Dankotuwa Porcelain has obtained the ISO 9000 certificate and the company has focused on maintaining consistent quality.

Dankotuwa Porcelain comes in three ranges as Elan for the international market, Dankotuwa Porcelain and conservative Laklain, a spokesperson said.
