A million jobs in Agribusiness by 2010 The National Agribusiness Council (NAC) yesterday launched its five-year strategic plan with the inaugural session in Colombo. The plan which aims at achieving the ambitious and nationally significant goal of creating one million rewarding employment opportunities in the agribusiness industry by year 2010, embraces a series of strategic initiatives in ten key result areas including national agribusiness strategy, agriculture research and development and entrepreneur development in agribusiness. The plan also envisages creating business opportunities for agricultural graduates within the agribusiness industry and setting up of an agricultural bank to provide micro finance assistance to the agribusiness entrepreneurs. The plan also contains initiatives to introduce information technology at the grassroot level of the industry synergising the Government's e- Sri Lanka initiative. The NAC will also set up agribusiness centres in the rural areas in an endeavour to directly link producers with exporters and processors, and at the same time disseminate technology and market information to producers. The strategic planning process was facilitated by strategy consultants, Management Frontiers, and was steered by a committee comprising the Director General Dr. U P de S Waidyanatha, Mario de Alwis, Aruna Weerakoon, Dr. Tissa Jayatilake and Lasantha Wcikremasooriya representing the affiliate Associations of the Council. The Council is the apex organisation for eighteen agribusiness related trade and producers Associations all of whom actively contributed to this planning process. |
