Trinitians for Taiwan Dance Festivals A ten member oriental dance troupe from Trinity College, Kandy left recently on a two month tour of Taiwan. According to Tilak Fernando, Director, Sri Lanka Taiwan Cultural Programme, the Trinitians will hold a series of performances in the southern capital of Kaolisinng in Taiwan including two international Folklore Festivals. Tilak Fernando emphasised that the Trinity College dancers will perform only traditional up country and low country dance items and that too in the traditional costumes. At a time when many Sri Lankan dance troupes which go even under state patronage tend to perform ballet type of dancers merely to please the audience he said that we should retain the traditional dance forms at all cost.
The Trinity College Dance Troupe was started in the centenary year of the school in 1972 during the tenure of E. L. Fernando who was principal 1968-1977. Since then the Trinitians have toured England in 1978, 1986, 1992 and 1998 while this is their first Asian tour which is also the longest. The troupe was trained by the schools dance instructor Vipula Janashantha and comprises the following: Asitha Gamlath, Ravinath Weerakoon, Eayan Heetigoda, Prasad Jayalatharachchi, Kassapa Ellepola, Eayan Ratnayake, Kavan Amunugama, Dineth Gunathilaka and Dinil Basnayake. The troupe was accompanied by Tilak Fernando and Vipula Janashantha. **** Back **** |
