Suntel rolls the bowling show for the third year running Suntel Trophy 2003 Bowling finals will roll out at Strikes Bowling Centre (formally Y2K) today. Held for the 3rd consecutive year, this prestigious tournament is organised by Suntel Ltd., Sri Lanka's leading telecom service provider. The final of this event is a high mark in the local bowling calendar. The coveted event is eagerly awaited not only by the participants of the mercantile sector but by all bowling enthusiasts. That number, today, is ever on the increase. Steeply rising numbers of companies vying for the tournament justly shows how popular the game is. Dinesh de Silva, Manager, Strikes Bowling Centre said, "Introduced only four years ago, bowling is a new game to Sri Lanka. In our very first year, Suntel, showing their pioneering spirit, as always, came forward by organising a tournament for the mercantile sector. That was in 2001. The standards and the competitiveness of bowling have shown tremendous progress in just three years, for which we are very thankful to Suntel. Each year, Suntel invites companies representing various sectors to participate in the tournament, such as apparel, banking, finance, transport, manufacturing, advertising etc. Preliminary matches are played within sectors throughout the year. Winners and runners-up from each preliminary will be selected to participate in the finals. Speaking to media, captain of the Paradigm Clothing team Dilan Savio said, "Suntel Trophy was a unique experience for us. When we first played tenpin there were no tournaments. Majority of the games were within the companies and the competitive spirit was not there. Suntel Trophy gave us the opportunity to compete with a wide range of companies and the best thing is that this tournament is spread throughout the year. We were the winners at the last finals and we hope to give our best this year too and be champs again." Roshan Silva, the captain of the Commercial Bank team said, "Without any doubt we could say Suntel Trophy has given well needed professional status for competitive bowling in Sri Lanka. We started this game with a number of difficulties. Low turn up was one of them, with only 4-5 members joining in. The Suntel tournament however has given us enthusiastic and able members and the much needed competitive spirit to make the Commercial Bank team perform well in the last two outings." Participants of the event say Suntel as the organiser of this tournament has always strived to provide a sporting environment that is fun filled and fare by all and leave them bowled over by the experience which is beyond their expectations. |
