Dilshan (4/17) guides Bloomfield to victory

by Chris Dhambarage

Bloomfield set up a final showdown with Colts CC when they edged out NCC by five runs in the Premier division one limited overs cricket tournament second sem ifinal match played at the R. Premadasa Stadium under lights yesterday.

After compiling 248 for 9 Bloomfield went through some anxious moments during the latter stages before pulling off a thrilling victory at the end. Bloomfield were set to register a convincing victory having reduced their opponents to 199 for 7 at one stage. But the NCC last pair of Ravindra Pushpakumara and Chamikara Mudalige figured in a stand of 35 runs which brought them closer to their target.NCC made a good start during their run chase with Pradeep Hewage scoring a half century off 79 balls with six fours. Naveed Nawaz also completed a fifty and his knock of 53 was studded with six fours. In addition Kumara Sangakkara made 46 with one six and seven boundaries. The unlikely hero for Bloomfield was Tillekeratne Dilshan who captured 4 wickets for 17 runs.

Earlier Indika de Saram (74) and Thilina Kandambi (75) completed two good half centuries and helped Bloomfield reach 248 for 9 from their 50 overs. Indika de Saram held their middle order together with a determined batting performance after they had lost both openers quite cheaply.

Ravindra Pushpakumara and Akalanka Ganegama did the early damage through some superb hostile bowling. They were well supported by Chamikara Mudalige and Upul Chandana who also picked up two wickets each. However Bloomfield recovered from the early set back and eventually reached a challenging score mainly due to a superb effort from Thilina Kandambi.

Despite having to bat most of the time with the tailenders Kandambi put up a brave effort to hit a top score of 75 while batting under tremendous pressure. He hoisted two sixes and struck six boundaries while collecting his runs from 105 deliveries. Indika de Saram faced only 75 balls during his innings and stroked seven fours and one six.

Bloomfield: 248 for 9 in 50 overs (Ian Daniel 27, Sanath Jayasuriya 11, Indika de Saram 74, Thilina Kandambi 75, Chamikara Mudalige 2 for 40, Ravindra Pushpakumara 2 for 46, Akalanka Ganegama 2 for 46, Upul Chandana 2 for 49)

NCC: 243 in 49.2 overs (Pradeep Hewage 50, Kumar Sangakkara 46, Naveed Nawaz 53, Upul Chandana 15, Ravindra Pushpakumara 24 n.o, Chamikara Mudalige 14, Kaushal Lokuarachchi 3 for 51, Tillekeratne Dilshan 4 for 17)
