Cautious welcome to SLFP-JVP Alliance

Progressive political parties cautiously welcomed the proposed SLFP-JVP Alliance Agreement which is to be signed next week by the General Secretaries of the two parties.

MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardena commenting on the new trend remarked that the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed on January 20 is a historic step displaying the strong unity among the progressive and patriotic forces promising the materialisation of the people's aspirations.

While conveying MEP's warm wishes, "we pledge our active dedication to the cause of building up a broad united front with confidence," Gunawardena said. EPDP media spokesman Nelson Edirisinghe commenting on the latest development, stated that if this alliance is offering an immediate political solution to the ethnic problem the main issue in the country, "we welcome and support it."

"We trust that the proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the SLFP and the JVP will succeed to achieve this objective," he said.

Sri Lanka Communist Party General Secretary DEW Gunasekera said their party stance will be made known after the discussion between the President, the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and the Sri Lanka Communist Party shortly.
