What is wrong with Kurunegala cricket?

by Gerry Vaidyasekera

I was taken aback at the negligence of the present Officials of the Kurunegala District Cricket Association in not taking part in the Provincial Cricket Tournament now being played.

May I remind the present Officials of the K.D.C.A. that this Association was formed by me at the request of Nisal Senaratna, then Secretary of the Board of Control, He maintained that a representative side from Wayamba (North Western Province) was essential to make the proposed Provincial Cricket Tournament a success.

The Kurunegala District Cricket Association was formed by me with the late T. B. Werapitiya, a gentleman to his fingertips, as its First President and me as its First Secretary. The late Attorney Gerry Perera, ably assisted by his life long friend, Azam Hameed, Vernon Wandurugala, Rufus Senanayake, Salinda Rekawa and a few others devoted their time and leisure to see that Kurunegala was well represented in the early Provincial Tournaments. Gerry Perera spent all his time, energy and his wealth to foster the game of Cricket in Kurunegala.

As the only Living Founder Member of this Association I am deeply grieved at the non-participation of Kurunegala in this Tournament. May I also remind them that though we were no match for the powerful Western Province teams, we defeated Central and Southern Provinces many a time.

I now appeal to the present Officials of the K.D.C.A. to enter the Tournament next year. May I also ask them, at my late age in life, to grant me the much desired pleasure to enter the name Kurunegala in the Cricketer's Bible, Wisden.

I am at a loss to understand the nonchalance of the Officials concerned in the selection of Name for the Provincial Cricket Tournament Trophy I was the Recorder of this Tournament in its early stages, and know well the great desire of Hemaka Amarasuriya, to make this Tournament a success. This Tournament was his Brain Wave and Foster Child. He nurtured and spent large sums of money on this venture.

But, unfortunately, to him and to me as a cricket writer, our well-known and leading cricketers, including our Test Captain, made very few appearances. This deprived the Tournament of its promising value. The Board of Control at that time is at fault, for not utilising this Tournament as a testing ground in the selection of national sides.

In conclusion, may I be bold to state that no other person is worthy of the name of the Provincial Cricket Tournament Trophy than Hemaka Amarasuriya.
