Sri Lankan junior slicers beat Maldives 3/0

The junior slicers of the Sri Lanka carom team came up with a splendid performance when they defeated the Maldives junior carrom team to win the series with a 3/0 victory.

The inaugural carrom encounter series was basically aimed to give exposure to junior slicers and also with the concept of promoting international competition between the two countries.

The tournament was held recently at the CFSL head quarters, Reid Avenue and at the De Mazenod college, Kandana.

The rubber of the unofficial mini test series consisted of 9 singles event in total in the age group of 15, 16 and 21 for boys and girls.

The Sri lankan junior slicers beat Maldives 7/2 in the first encounter series, however the Maldives slicers displayed a better performance when Hassan Ali of Maldives defeated Chamil Cooray, the national champ with scores of 22/12, 17/28, 22/18 and the team losing marginally to Sri Lanka 4/5 overall, in the second encounter unofficial mini test.

The Sri Lankan slicers having won 2/0 over a set their eyes to wrap up the series 3/0 in favour of the host country.

Chamil Cooray, the national champ made certain to gain victory on this occasion over Hussan Ali by winning the final match with scores of 18/21, 22/18, 22/05.

Another slicer from Maldives Shafir Mohammed also excelled in winning two of the three matches in which he participated. Overall a high standard of carom was witnessed at the tournaments.

The award ceremony of tournament took place at the CFSL Head quarters, with a large crowd of distinguished guests and well wishers and special thanks to Dr. Zahir Nasir President of the Asian Carrom Federation and the promoter of carrom in Maldives.

The Director of Sports Milton Amarasinghe gave away the prizes to the winners and the runners-up of the tournaments and the award ceremony of the national championship was also held simultaneously.
