ACU officials in Sri Lanka for inquiry

Two officials of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) are currently in Sri Lanka conducting inquiries into the news report which appeared in the 'Sunday Observer' of December 21 regarding the finding of Rs. 11 lakhs in the hotel room occupied by a Sri Lankan cricketer during the second cricket Test between Sri Lanka and England at Kandy.

The officials have already questioned and got a statement from the journalist who wrote the story. They were expected to question the hotel authorities as well where the Sri Lanka team was staying.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) acting chief executive officer Duleep Mendis said that the ACU officials had not made any request to interview any of the national cricketers.

"They are conducting an independent inquiry into the matter, which is the usual practice. They will submit a report to the ICC on their findings," said Mendis.

"An official inquiry can be conducted only if there is a report submitted by either the ICC match referee or the official of the ACU who is assigned for the series within 24 hours of an incident. There was no such report regarding this matter," he said.

A press release from SLC states: "Members of the anti-corruption unit of the ICC were in Sri Lanka to verify facts independently on the media reports published recently with regard to Rs. 1.1 million found in the hotel room that was occupied by many foreign guests as well as Marvan Atapattu in Kandy Earls Regency Hotel.

"These officials met officials of Sri Lanka Cricket and as there was no evidence of any breach of conduct on the part of the player concerned, there was no necessity to conduct an official inquiry."
