Colts - Sebs in battle for final berth

by Chris Dhambarage

Colts Cricket Club will start favourites to reach the final when they confront the giant killers Sebastianites Cricket & Athletic Club in the Premier Division one limited overs cricket tournament first semifinal to be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium under lights today.

Colts CC were the runners-up in the Premier League tournament and will be out for an improved performance which will give them the chance of meeting either Bloomfield or NCC in the final scheduled for January 22 at the same venue. The team is studded with a number of top allrounders and are further strengthened with the return of all their national players.

However Sebastianites SC are a determined lot having created a couple of upsets on their way to the semifinals. They had the better of CCC by six wickets in their final league match and finished runners up from group 'B' with a total of 20 points. Altogether they recorded six victories from seven outings with just one defeat.

Colts CC too were the runners-up from group 'A' with a total of 26 points from seven outings. On paper they certainly have a better combination with most of their senior players in top form and also having excelled for their respective provinces during the Inter Provincial four day cricket tournament.

Sajith Fernando is the most consistent run getter for Colts CC with a total of 221 runs to his credit including two half centuries. In form batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana too has two fifties to his credit in this tournament giving him a total of 190 points. The other top run getters are Shantha Kalawitigoda and all rounder Jeevantha Kulatunga.

In the bowling department Colts CC will depend a lot on test cap Chaminda Vaas with Eric Upashantha, Dulip Liyanage and Niroshan Bandaratilleke to provide the back up support. The Sebastianites will be hoping that their star batsman Nuwan Shiroman would strike form in this important fixture. The consistent opener has been in tremendous form having compiled over three hundred runs with four half centuries.
