Army to conduct human rights courses by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The Sri Lanka Army is to conduct a series of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights courses, seminars and produce a training film with financial assistance from British High Commission in 2004 under its five-year education plan on IHL & HR. This was revealed at the seminar held at Hotel Taj Samudra on HR for 46 senior officers of the Armed Forces recently. British High Commissioner Stephen Evans who was the Guest of Honour at the event explaining the importance of HR principles for total development of the country confirmed his continuous support for 2004 program. The British High Commission conducted an extensive field evaluation to see the impact of the training after which they supported by spending over Rs. 3 million for schedule IHL & HR training for 2003 for the Sri Lanka Army through the Institute of Human Rights. The seminar concluded with a Panel discussion on "The Ethnic Conflict, the Peace Process and Human Rights where Nalin Suvaris, Vasudewa Nanayakara, Dayan Jayatilake, S. Balakrishnan, Air Vice Marshal Harry Gunatilake and Bhavani Fonseka participated. |
