Govt. has allowed NYSC to die a natural death - Dinesh Gunawardana

Maharagama special correspondent

The Government has totally ignored and neglected the youth. Not a single program is launched to uplift the standard of the youth. The only institution that to benefit the youth, the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) is lingering to death. The Government had purposely allowed the NYSC to die a natural death said the leader of the MEP and the MP for Colombo District Dinesh Gunawardana.

He made this statement addressing a ceremony held at Mawathagama, Meepe organised by the Ran Tharu Youth Club recently.

This ceremony was held to declare open the Philip Gunawardana Sudharaka Youth Centre built out of decentralised budget funds of Dinesh Gunawardana MP, Provincial Minister Mahesh Almeida and Provincial Councillor Lionel Kariyawasam to mark the 103rd birth anniversary of late leader of the MEP Philip Gunawardana.

Dinesh Gunawardana added: "The youth generation is the backbone of a country. But during the last two years the Government has not done anything to strengthen that backbone. Yearly nearly 360,000 students are being admitted to schools. Out of them nearly 80,000 get qualified for higher education. But unfortunately only 14,000 are being admitted to universities. What are the steps taken for the dropped out youth from the schools.

There are more than 30,000 graduates without jobs. This is the cream of the country. This is the best lot to be absorbed for the development of the country. This government does not have any program for the country.

The greatest hindrance for the development of the country is the out dated colonial type financial regulations, circulars, rules and regulations. Most of the higher level government officers are also colonial type people. No government that had come to power had taken any step to tame this unruly aristocratic government officers.

The plaque of the memorial youth centre was unveiled by Dinesh Gunawardana.
