News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | J-Biz calls for a Minister in charge of peace process by Stanley Samarasinghe We do not urge the two main political parties to come together to form a National Government. Our call is to the President and the Prime Minister to think of the country and its people and build up and act on a common consensus that will solve the two main problems of peace and economy, observed Joint Business Forum President Mahendra Amarasuriya yesterday. In his dialogue with our correspondent, Mahendra Amarasuriya emphasised the importance of the two main political parties acting on a consensus at this juncture and totally rejected the idea of going for a General Election as a solution to the present crisis. The existing Constitution is the source of all these problems. Without amending the Constitution an Election will yield no results. In addition to the huge expenditure involved in conducting an election, the incidence of violence will cost many lives and damage to property. It will take many months to restore stability. Therefore, we do not advocate a General Election as a solution at this juncture, he commented. Q.The portfolio of Defence is one of the major causes that prevents a consensus between the two main political parties. Does the Joint Business Forum suggest any solution to this problem? A.Yes. A Minister in Charge of the Peace Process can be appointed.Decisions involving major issues of defence could be taken by the Defence Committee headed by the President. Q.If the two parties cannot be brought together what is your next step? A. All entrepreneur organizations, Professionals and all civil organizations can launch a joint protest. We trust that we are strong enough to achieve that task, answered the Joint Business Forum President. |
