Assaulting undergrads : Minister, ten others appear in court

The case in which Fisheries and Oceanic Resources Minister Mahinda Wijesekera and ten others were charged for assaulting the undergraduates who were on a fast unto death and causing damage to their property was taken up yesterday before Matara Chief Magistrate, Rohan Jayawardene.

All suspects including the Minister were present in court. Attorney-at-Law Kalinga Indratissa, Razik Zarook, Channa Gunaratne, Tissa Dissanayake, Sarath Karunanayake, Nelani de Silva and Nimal Silva appearing for the suspects, submitted that except for charge No. 1, the rest should be referred to the Mediation Board.

Ambalangoda SP, Dayawansa and a team of police officers led the prosecution. The Magistrate put off the case for February 16.

Heavy security measures had been enforced within the court premises.
