News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President directs Internal Affairs Ministry Secretary to abolish false applications President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday directed the Secretary, Ministry of Internal Affairs to abolish all false applications forwarded by political parties that gave political advantage when granting citizenship to persons of Indian origin. The President had instructed that granting of citizenship should be handled by the respective Divisional Secretary, Pradeshiya Secretary and the Grama Niladharis. The Presidential directive followed representations to the President that certain political parties in the plantations were trying to capitalise on the citizenship program of persons of Indian origin. The President yesterday held a discussion at her official residence to expedite the process of citizenship to persons of Indian origins in the plantations early. She instructed the authorities to obtain the cooperation of estate superintendents in the State and private sector and implement a special scheme to provide National Identity Cards through the Department of Registration of Persons. Parliament unanimously approved a Bill recently to grant citizenship to persons of Indian origin in the plantations. Nearly 200,000 persons are to benefit by this Bill. |
