'Techno Lanka 2004' at Kuliyapitiya

By Sudarshana Perera

The Ministry of Science and Technology along with private sector ICT firms will start 'Techno Lanka' 2004 at the Kuliyapitiya National School today. The exhibition is to attract schoolchildren, public servants and other professionals in the North-East province creating awareness on the need for ICT applications. This was made known at a media briefing at the Science and Technology Ministry yesterday.

"Through this exhibition, we are focussing to make a radical transformation in educational, government and economic sectors in the province by introducing ICT and related concepts " said Minister of Science and Technology Keheliya Rambukwella.

Minister Rambukwella said that this exhibition paves the way for the private sector to market their products in rural areas while showcasing the developments on ICT and its relevance to raise the quality of life." The strategy of the program is a win-win modality", he said. Parallel to this exhibition, we will also open ICT training institutions in all 29 Divisional Secretariats.

" We have also recruited 500 graduates to spearhead the ICT training centres in the province. Deliberations are also under way to train ICT trainees with the assistance of an Indian Base ICT body "Wisdom IT".

We want to produce a knowledge based society in Sri Lanka to face global challenges with the vast developments in technology", he said. According to the Minister, more than 75,000 students have confirmed their participation at the exhibition.

Minister of State Transport, Upali Piyasoma said that with Techno Lanka exhibition a firm foundation will be laid to solve agricultural, dairy and marketing problems the farmers are facing and I am optimistic that ICT and ICT based concepts will add a new dimension to every sector in the province.

He commended the support extended by the political hierarchies in the province irrespective of their political affiliations.

The exhibition will continue till January 18 at the Kuliyapitiya National School Grounds.
