Innings win for Josephians

by Chris Dhambarage

St. Joseph's College avenged their last years defeat when they trounced St. Benedict's College by an innings in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school match at Kotahena last week.

The Josephians completely outplayed their opponents in all departments of the game and added the finishing touches with plenty of overs to spare. Off spinner Rajeev Weerasinghe was the architect behind their success where he returned career best figures of seven for 23. Incidentally Weerasinghe completed a matchbag of ten wickets having troubled the Benedictines in the first innings too.

St. Benedict's College went into this game with a better frame of mind and having produced some outstanding contributions in their last couple of games. But the Josephians made their intentions clear from the start and were more positive in both batting and bowling. They took the initiative and won a big psychological battle by dismissing the opposition for 101 runs.

Skipper Ranesh Perera led from the front with three crucial wickets ably supported well by Rajeev Weerasinghe. In fact Weerasinghe came into his own on the second day where he ran through the Benedictine batting line up virtually single handedly. As a result the home side were shot out for their lowest score - 89 runs and handing over St. Joseph's College an innings victory.

Ananda v St. Peter's

Ananda College had a highly successful week where they beat St. Peter's College by an innings and also came closer of defeating S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia on their home grounds at Ananda Mawatha. The Anandians brought down the high riding Peterites with a tremendous all round performance winning by a convincing margin at the end.

The powerful Ananda batting line up struck form at the correct time with Thilina Kumarasinghe leading the way. Kumarasinghe hit a stylish 113 as Ananda piled up a massive first innings total of 362 for 6. In reply the Peterites were shot out for just 111 runs in their first innings and following on they were bundled out for 113 runs in the second innings.

Ananda v S. Thomas'

The Anandians produced a similar batting performance against the Thomians too running up a mammoth 371 for 8 in their first innings. This time it was Damindu Kularatne who took the opportunity to pile on the runs scoring a fluent 104. The Thomians folded up for 180 in their first innings and were forced to follow on for the first time in the current season.

The Thomians batted more determinedly in their second attempt with skipper Kaushal Silva stroking a fighting knock of 86 while batting under tremendous pressure.

The Ananda bowlers really made run making difficult for the batsmen through some splendid accurate bowling. But Kaushal Silva stood between an Ananda win and a Thomian defeat as he frustrated the home side with solid defence and superb temperament.

St. Sebastian's v De Mazenod

Meanwhile St. Sebastian's College Moratuwa experienced mixed fortunes during last week while defeating De Mazenod College Kandana and going down to St. Peter's College on the first innings. The Sebastianites cruised to a ten wicket win over De Mazenod with Geeth Silva claiming a matchbag of seven wickets.

Geeth Silva mesmerised the opposition with a deadly spell of bowling with De Mazenod surrendering to a seasons lowest 36 in their first innings. They put up an improved performance in their second innings but the damage was done on the opening day and succumbed to a ten wicket defeat.

St. Peter's v St. Sebastian's

However St. Sebastian's College suffered a shock first innings defeat at the hands of St. Peter's College where they were dismissed for a disappointing 105 runs. This was an encouraging performance and a superb comeback by the Peterites after having gone down to Ananda a couple of days ago.

They looked more determined on the field and took the initiative by piling up 254 runs in their first innings.

Prajeev Jansz and Hans Fernando completed useful half centuries as the Peterites made the maximum use from a good batting track. The Peterites also had the luxury of enforcing the follow on and had the satisfaction of dismissing their opponents for the second time in the match.

Wesley v Trinity

Trinity College put up a stunning performance to take first innings points over Wesley College in their match at Campbell Park. The Trinitians defended their modest total of 179 quite successfully and bowled out the home side for just over one hundred runs. Muneer and T. M. Fernando formed a good combination sharing nine wickets between them.

Royal v St. Anthony's

Royal College bounced back from last week's setback to beat St. Anthony's College Katugastota on the first innings in their match played at Reid Avenue. Their batting in particular showed a tremendous improvement with Naveen Dias smashing an unbeaten 162 in their first innings total of 290 for 6. Royal in fact came closer of pulling off an outright win as the Antonians collapsed to 152 for 8 in their second innings after having asked to follow on.

Dharmasoka v Richmond

Upul Tharanga hit a career best 213 with nine sixes and twenty fours as Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda beat Richmond College on the first innings in their match played at Galle.

Ramesh Padmika captured nine wickets for 60 including a hat-trick as Piliyandala Central defeated C. W. W. Kannangara MV by eight wickets in their match played at Piliyandala. Raddoluwa MV scored a first innings win over Maris Stella College in their inter school match played at Negombo.
