Women boxers win medals for Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan women boxers won three bronze medals at the recently concluded 2nd Asian Women's Boxing Championships held in Hisar, india recently.

In the 46 kg class, Pte. L. G. Chandrika of Sri Lanka Army won decisively against her Japanese opponent Yuko Suzuki, to enter the semi-finals. She lost her bout with MC Marykom from India, who was the world champion and eventual gold medalist. Twenty two year old Chandrika was a national champion in 2002 and 2003. She represented Sri Lanka at the 1st Asian Women's Boxing Championships 2001 held in Bangkok and the 2nd World Women's Boxing Championships held in Turkey in 2002.

Chandrika attended Amarasooriya Maha Vidyalaya in Meepawala, Poddala. Her teammates in Hisar chose her as their team captain.

Anusha Dilrukshi Kodituwakku, a 23-year-old boxer from Slimline won her bronze medal in the 48 kg class. She defeated her opponent Momo Koseki from Japan in the quarterfinals but failed to win over Ri Jong Hyang of DPK (North Korea) who later on won the gold medal. Anusha has only been a boxer for 2 years and in that short period of time, she was picked as the best boxer at the Novices Boxing Meet in 2001 and at the Women's National Championships in 2003. Anusha attended the Hamangalla Maha Vidyalaya in Giriula.

Twenty-four-year-old Pte. P. K. Sumudu of the Sri Lanka Army has started boxing only less than two years ago but in Hisar, she showed lot of skills and power by outscoring her opponent Hu Yashi Ming of Taipei.

In the semi-finals, she boxed against Kim Hye Yong of North Korea but had to settle for a bronze medal. Sumudu hails from Polgampola, Matugama where she went to the Kavetyagala Maha Vidyalaya. She joined the army in 1999. In 2001, she joined the army boxing team which was coached by Capt. R. K. Indrasena. Sumudu was the National Women's Boxing Champion in 2002 and 2003 in the 63 kg weight division.

The other members of the team who participated at the 2nd Asian Women's Boxing Championships were: Nilmini Jayasinghe (50 kg) - Slimline, N. Ekanayake (52 kg) - Army, Nilmini Gamlath (54 kg) - Slimline, S. Karunaratne (57 kg) - Army, M. Susanthi (60 kg) - Army and Shiromala (46 kg - alternate) - Police. The boxers were ably coached by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, Cuban coach Jorge Luis Matos Frometa.
