Dinuka (5-86) bowls WP to victory

Dinuka Hettiarachchi took five wickets in the second innings as Western Province defeated Uva Province by seven wickets on the fourth and final day of their inter provincial cricket tournament match concluded at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

Uva Province did well to avoid an innings defeat scoring 363 in their second innings with opener Ian Daniel stroking a superb 125 with fourteen fours and one six. But the rest of the batting collapsed against the spin of Dinuka Hettiarachchi with pacemen Dilhara Fernando and Thilina Thushara capturing two wickets each.

Uva Province: 235 and 363 (Ian Daniel 125, Anushka Polonowita 37, Dilhara Fernando 2 for 78, Thilina Thushara 2 for 27, Dinuka Hettiarachchi 5 for 86).

Western Province: 507 for 9 decl and 92 for 3 (Pradeep Hewage 46). - D.W.

NCP win despite Sanath's ton

Sri Lanka's dashing opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya hit a majestic 185 runs but could not prevent North Central Province pulling off a thrilling 20 run win over Southern Province on the fourth and final day of their inter provincial cricket tournament match concluded at Galle yesterday.

Jayasuriya struck 25 fours and hoisted three sixes as Southern Province scored 471 in their second innings after having set a victory target of 491 runs. Rangana Herath took the bowling honours with the best figures of five wickets for 120.

North Central Province: 365 and 309.

Southern Province: 184 and 471 (Sanath Jayasuriya 185, Marvan Atapattu 57, Chamara Silva 51, Rangana Herath 5 for 120, Kumara Dharmasena 3 for 95, Nuwan Kulasekera 2 for 85). - C.D.

Singha SC defeated Kandy YCC by two wickets in their P. Saravanamuttu trophy cricket tournament match played at the BRC grounds yesterday.

Kandy YCC: 218 (S. Thittangalla 125, Suraj Sanjeewa 3 for 56, L. Ranasinghe 3 for 56, Sriyan Sanjeewa 2 for 27) and 150 (L. Fernando 49, C. Siriwardena 4 for 50, L. Ranasinghe 4 for 29).
