News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | DLF calls for new political formation The Democratic Left Front in a statement issued yesterday said building of a political formation which could bring economic relief to the common masses, foster lasting peace through a Federal solution to the ethnic problem and ensure democratic freedoms was the prime need of the hour. All political parties, organisations and individuals subscribing to these policies should join hands to give leadership that masses who were waiting with great hopes to achieve these goals. The statement added that the economic and other measures taken by the Cabinet headed by the President and Prime Minister have become unbearable to the ordinary masses. The prices of all essential items have been skyrocketing as indicated by the Commerce price indices of November and December 2003. The situation was likely to further aggravate in the near future. Due to the vast disparity in the purchasing power prevailing in our society the low income groups would be the worst affected by this situation. It was abject poverty which had prevented the poor from professing a religion they liked. It was therefore both natural and justifiable to poor sections of the community to subscribe to any condition and obtain financial assistance from any organisation for the upkeep of their families. The statement added that it was unfortunate to see racial and religious discord raising its dirty head again at a time when people of all racial and religious groups had to join hands to fight against the repressive economic policies of the government. Although it was wrong on the President to have taken over three ministries the government too was committing wrong by harping on it and neglecting the opportunity to make a united effort to carry forward the peace process. The urgent need of the hour therefore was to build a political camp which could free the masses from the present economic difficulties, promote lasting peace through a federal solution to the ethnic problem and stabilise democratic freedoms by eradicating arbitrary powers of politicians and officials. All political parties, organisations and persons subscribing to these policies should therefore come forward and join hands to give leadership to the masses in achieving these goals. |
