by Nadira Gunatilleke United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation for 2004. The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2004 Awards recognise the achievement of individuals, organisations or companies in the conservation/restoration of a structure or a series of structures in the private sector that have lasted over 50 years. Houses, commercial, cultural, religious, industrial or institutional buildings, gardens and bridges are eligible for consideration. Public-private partnership projects such as historic towns, urban quarters and rural settlements where essential elements more than 50 years are also eligible. Works completed within the last 10 years are eligible for consideration. `Award of Excellence', `Award of Distinction' and `Honourable Mention' will be given. Entries for buildings may be submitted by the registered land and building owner, registered lessee, or conservation consultant, architect or designer, any one involved in the conservation / restoration process, preferably throughout the entire course of work.
