Polgolla National College students demonstrate

by Indrani Thoradeniya and Indika Polkotuwa

The intern students of the Polgolla National College of Education launched a demonstration in the heart of Kandy Town yesterday (Jan.12)demanding the immediate removal of College Directress S.I.K Nonis from office.

The demonstrators who assembled opposite the George E de Silva park around 3. p.m. yesterday, carried placards condemning the management and called upon the Education Ministry to meet their demand forthwith.

Students' Union Organiser G.V.Mahendra Mohan stated that the inefficient and despotic administration under the present Directress has seriously degraded the institution during the past two years and that in the event of failure to remove her from office immediately, their organisation will take steps to enfold other campus unions into their struggle.

Meanwhile the Mahanayaka of the Asigiriya Chapter Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera has urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to intervene to resolve the crisis at the Polgolla National Education Faculty.

The Mahanayaka Thera has made this request by letter addressed to the Prime Minister warning that a delay may even lead to a religious conflict.

The non-academic staff, lecturers and students of the Polgolla National College of Education who are currently on a hunger strike called on People's Alliance Media Spokesman and Kandy District MP Dr.Sarath Amunugama at his Nugawela residence last Sunday morning and sought a solution to their grievance.

Dr. Amunugama who gave a patient hearing to the hunger strikers observed that their grievance which involves fraud and corruption in the payment of their petty allowance is a minor issue which has blown into an epidemic proportion due to the inefficacy of the Board of Management.

"We are dealing with an intelligent generation today.

In our educational institutions we need honest and efficient administrators who can guide the students by pointing out to them their frailties and not those who do wrong under the eyes of the students and wield political backing to shield their misdeeds", remarked Dr. Amunugama.

As the discussion was in progress, Dr. Amunugama contacted Education Ministry Secretary V. K. Nanayakkara and explained to him the issue concerned and requested for an early reasonable solution.

Non-academic Staff Forum Secretary Sagara Wijeratne, Vice President A.S.Perera, Executive Committee member Nissanka and a few students expressed their views at this discussion.
