Ven. Galagama Dhammaransi Thera, the Registrar of the Amarapura Siri Saddhamma Yukthika Maha Nikaya in a media communique of January 9, urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe not to forsake the peace process pursued by him, but to forge ahead with it in the interest of the country's future. "The Buddhist Clergy in this country who are at all times against war and who are lovers of peaceful co-existence are deeply perturbed by the news that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to totally abdicate the Ceasefire Agreement signed between the LTTE Leader and himself," it read. "As the Head of the State, the President has never opposed the Peace Process. She risked her life to usher in peace from the very outset and expressed her willingness to share power and even to delegate her own Executive Powers as a solution to the North East crisis", the communique continued. If the Prime Minister, instead of realising the reality, tries to give various excuses and wants to run away from the peace process, it only shows his inability to take up the challenge before the country. Under the circumstances, the Venerable Thera urged the Premier not to walk away from the peace process but to follow it up with due respect to the principle of political co-existence and ignore petty differences in the interest of the country and its people. |
