by Nadira Gunatilleke Rescue teams were yesterday digging the debris searching for the three persons missing in an earthslip in Walapane on Sunday morning while the Social Welfare Ministry geared itself to meet contingency plans to draw up relief measures. Newly 150 persons of 16 families have lost their homes due to the earthslip that also destroyed several acres of land. The Social Welfare Ministry has instructed the authorities to submit reports on the estimated damage caused to lives and property due to the earthslip that shook Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya district in the early hours of Sunday morning, Social Welfare Ministry Media Coordinator Nimal Premasiri said. He said cooked meals and dry rations will be provided to the displaced on the direction of Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera. The Divisional Secretary has made arrangements to provide relief for the displaced persons and produce receipts to the ministry to have funds released. The Ministry will pay Rs. 100,000 for a damaged house beyond repair and Rs. 40,000 for a partly damaged house. Funds will be released as soon as the reports are submitted to the ministry. The landslide occurred after the river bank of Udamaraduwa Dunkalahena tank was destroyed due to continued heavy rains in the area. The ancient river bank was destroyed because the anicut was not opened at the correct time to release the extra water. The displaced persons are housed at the Udamaraduwa Vidyapradeepa Vidyalaya. Nearly 150 acres have been destroyed due to the landslide. |
