Workshop on 'Organic Food ingredients for industrial use' to promote exports to EU

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is organising a workshop on "Organic Food ingredients for industrial use" in association with CBI Netherlands. CBI is the Centre for promotion of Imports from developing countries, in the Netherlands. Joost Pierrot and Marc van Genuchten of CBI will conduct the workshop and speak on the Organic Food Market in Europe, on how to enhance exports of organic food ingredients to Europe through CBI's Export Development Program (EDP) and what forms of assistance will be given by the CBI under this Program.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, January 22, at the Ground Floor Auditorium of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce at, Nawam Mawatha, Colombo 2 from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon. After the workshop the experts from CBI will have one to one meetings with companies interested in obtaining CBI assistance to develop exports of organic food ingredients to EU.

The products to be covered under this program are certified organic products or products in conversion including processed fruits and vegetables, concentrates, pulps, dried fruits and nuts, honey, spices, herbs, essential oils and oleresins, coffee, tea, cocoa, oils and fats and rice.

Companies interested in applying for CBI assistance to expand their organic exports to EU should meet certain criteria given below by the CBI.

* The ownership of the company (at least 51%) should be held by Sri Lankans or by co-owners residing in another developing country.

* The company is not a joint venture with a developed country or does not have a developed country as a parent company.

* The number of employees is between 25 and 500.

* The company is not bound by licence agreements that limit export possibilities to the EU.

* The management of the company is able to communicate in English.

* Companies interested in obtaining CBI assistance should request the Ceylon Chamber to arrange one to one meetings with CBI experts to ascertain whether they qualify to receive assistance. The Chamber will arrange such meetings, to be held after the workshop. CBI's EDP on "Organic food ingredients for industrial use" extends technical assistance to identified exporters in developing countries to improve their export performance on the EU market by:

* Assisting countries and exporters to comply with the EU market requirements.

* Strengthening the capabilities of these exporters through improvements to production, quality, export marketing and management.

* Assisting individual companies to obtain a firm and durable position in the EU market.

* Promoting selected countries on the EU market as sources of organic food ingredients. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the EU market and ascertain whether their companies would be eligible to obtain technical assistance from the CBI to enhance their exports to the EU. Deputy Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber Mahen Dayananda will chair the workshop.
