EU Trade Commissioner to attend Dhaka conference

Trade Commissioner of the European Union (EU) Pascal Lamy will attend the International Business Conference on Global Economic Governance and Challenges of Multilateralism organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) - Bangladesh to be held in Dhaka on January 17 and 18. Commissioner Lamy is responsible for all trade negotiations including WTO on behalf of EU. EU is the second largest trade and development partners of Bangladesh.

The conference, with its line-up of worldwide government and business leaders will go a long way after the collapse of Cancun, to bolster a revival of global trade talks.

It is also hoped that all the trade ministers and business leaders meeting at the Dhaka Conference would recover from the Cancun hangover and may again indicate ways for restarting the multilateral trade negotiations.

The Dhaka meeting is also expected to inject the much-needed momentum in the ongoing negotiations under the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) and in particular, market access commitments as well as capacity building for the LDCs.
