Forget differences, support President - PM to forge peace - CWA

Both the Sinhalese and Tamils are sick of internecine ethnic war and all political parties should purge political opportunism and divisive strategies and contribute their cooperation and worthy support to the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe at this crucial juncture to forge everlasting and durable peace.

Everyone was fallen aback, when they heard or saw the vast devastation caused by the war in the Jaffna peninsula.

We could well imagine the mental anguish and trauma of the people of Jaffna who had lost their houses, properties and kith and kin, said R. K. Suresh, Director, Administration of Ceylon Workers Alliance and General Secretary of Ceylon Estates, Staff's Association.

He was addressing a meeting held at Nuwara Eliya CWA Regional Office on January 8 which was attended by the educationists, leaders and intellectuals.

Speaking further at the meeting which was chaired by K. Karthigason, Industrial Relations Officer, he said it is not the Tamils alone who had suffered by the ethnic war, the Sinhalese youths from the villages had been made the cannon fodder.

Now it had dawned on the masses that the continuation of war would only impoverish the country and decimate the guardians of our country the youths.

Referring to the appalling living condition of the estate workers he said the plantation workers who have been rendering a vital service for the last 175 years were today living in abject poverty with a minimal wages hardly insufficient for their upkeep.

As a result the plantation workers become a segment of a society facing education, housing, health and poor wages and various other problems including unemployment for their progeny.
