Angry crowds clashed with police in Gampola yesterday after a youth was shot dead by the police personnel sent to quell a clash between two groups attending a musical show. The Army was deployed to beef up security in the town. Soldiers were patrolling in the town while a meeting was scheduled last night between the Security Forces and community representatives to ease the tensions. Gampola police said its officers who intervened to quell a clash between two groups were attacked by the quarrelling youth. An eighteen- year-old youth Suranja Sampath Dissanayake was shot dead when police fired to disperse the quarrelling youth. Angry villagers placed road blocks on the Kandy- Gampola highway and shops were closed in protest at the police shooting. Tyres were seen burning on the road, sources said. A spokesman for the Gampola Police said when the cops intervened to quell the tension, quarrelling youth hit them with stones and poles. "Two officers were injured and admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital. Three police vehicles were damaged," he said. He said the police fired live bullets when the clashing crowds did not react to teargas and rubber bullets. A meeting among local community representatives, police and Security Forces top brass to quell the tensions was scheduled last night. |
