Buddha Sasana should be protected - Nayaka Thera

Wadduwa Special Correspondent

The Buddha Sasana should be protected and safe-guarded by the Buddhists who should observe the precepts of the Buddha dhamma to set up a decent society.

There is a great threat to the Buddha Dhamma from an extremist section of fundamentalists in society," said the Ven. Bellana Pemananda Thera, Maha Sangha Nayaka of the Amarapura "Saddhamma Ukthika" Chapter participating at a religious ceremony, held in connection with the completion of 200 years of the Sri Pushparama Maha Viharaya at Payagala and the completion of 25 years of "Daham Pahana" religious program of the temple.

The Maha Nayaka thera delivering Anusasana said, "The people should inculcate the high ideals of teaching of Buddha dhamma to the minds and it should be retained and practised daily.

The Minister of Buddha Sasana has consorted the Maha Sangha that he would appoint a Sub Committee by discussing with the religious leaders to overcome the threats to religions."

The Nayaka Thera also stressed that Ven. Malegoda Narada Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Pushparamaya, Malegoda, Payagala renders a great service to the Buddha Sasana and is a respected and popular preacher of the dhamma.

Ven. Udawatta Nanda thera said, "The Ven. Nanda thera has made arrangements for the ordination of 25 bhikkhus as he has won the confidence of the people, but we are unable to search even two persons to ordinate. The parents are not willing to give children to ordinations as there are no children in families."

Ven. Malegoda Nanda Thera, the Sangha Nayaka of the Walalavita Korale said that its a very happy feature to note is that there are 43 Bhikkhus in the temple and 25 will be ordained very soon.

He said, "I expect to increase the number of Bhikkhus in the temple to 100. The Director of Payagala Mission Ivan Peters said, the Ven. Malegoda Nanda Thera has won the confidence of the church and there is a very strong relationship between the church and the temple. A bhikkhu with the qualities and acumen of the Ven. Malegoda Naradha Thera is a great necessity to the area.

Minister of Posts and Telecommunication Imthiasz Bakeer Markar, Minister of Lands Rajitha Senaratne and Kithsiri Kahatapitiya, the Leader of the Opposition of the Western Province Jayantha Sumanasekera, the Co-ordinating Officer of the National Development Authority also addressed.
