Contract killers identified

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) investigating the killing of underworld gang leader Dhammika Amarasinghe alias Dhammika Perera have identified the persons who allegedly gave the contract for the killing.

Police are also trying to ascertain the veracity of the lengthy statement made by assassin Chaminda Udaya Kumara, an army deserter.

CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda leading the investigation team on the direction of IGP Indra de Silva deployed teams to trace the contract killers.

"Their arrest is imminent," the SP added.

IGP Indra de Silva had instructed those responsible be traced and apprehended irrespective of their position and be produced before court.

Investigations upto yesterday revealed that the leaders of a rival underworld gang were also allegedly involved in the killing.

Dhammika was killed while being taken out of Court Number 6 of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on Friday morning, immediately after his case involving a double murder, was postponed on an application by Dhammika's Counsel Anton Senanayake pending the Attorney General's decision for a discharge.

The assailant Kumara alias 'Army Chaminda' father of two, produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya on Saturday was remanded until January 23.

Investigations also revealed that the suspect had been taken into custody by Grandpass police earlier for possessing a T 56 rifle and later released on bail.

Earlier investigations revealed that while the suspect held an outsider as hostage and attempted to escape, an Army corporal on duty near the Supreme Court succeeded in disarming the suspect who was handed over to the Police with the assistance of the two policemen on court duty.
