Giving a Sri Lankan identity to an Indian instrument

by Anjana Gamage

Wellknown Sri Lankan sitarist Pradeep Ratnayake will perform to celebrate the 54th anniversary of India's Republic Day which falls on January 23.

Ratnayake, who has obtained the highest marks in the history of Santiniketan for music will entertain the invitees with his magical fingers on sitar along with the other eminent artistes Chandralal Amarakoon on tabla, Ravibandu Vidyapathi on pakvaj, Piyasara Shilpadhipathy on geta bera and Udakki and Kanthi Shilpadhipathy on vocal.

The India Sri Lanka Foundation will present this special concert at the Bishop's College Auditorium on January 23 at 7.00 pm.

The High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka, Nirupam Sen and the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India Mangala Moonesinghe will be the guests of honour on this day. "Kuweni Asna recital" a unique attempt by Pradeep on how to use the Sitar instrument on our ancient kuweni asna will be a special feature at this concert.

Prof. Carlo Fonseka addressing a media briefing last week at the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), introduced Pradeep as a young talented musician who made an effort to introduce a Sri Lankan identity to the Sitar, which is an Indian instrument.

Pradeep has just completed his Master of Music degree at Santiniketan, India and his series of concerts by the name of Pradeepanjalee proved to be enormously popular with audiences here and also in Geneva and Abu Dhabi where he was invited to perform.

He entered the field of film music direction with veteran Lester James Peries' latest film "Wakanda Walawwa" which is to be screened shortly and Linton Semage's "Magey Wam Atha".

According to the ICC, the concert is free of charge and open to all by invitation. The invitations are available at the ICC from January 15.
