Civil aviation training academy set up

by Sudarshana Perera

In a move to produce skilful aviation human resources to be on par with international standards, Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka established its training academy and European union (EU) South Asia Project Office in Colombo on Saturday.

The new academy was opened by Tilak Marapana Minister of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation and is located at Aviation Authority Office premises.

"This aviation academy will add a new dimension to the entire aviation industry in Sri Lanka as the program will result in producing aviation experts in next three years" said Minister Marapana.

He said that the country is able to save millions which would otherwise have been spent on sending personnel abroad. "The number of foreign participants at these training sessions over the next three years will also contribute significant revenue to the country," he said.

He also commended the European Union for the confidence reposed in Sri Lanka by locating its Regional Project Office here.

Speaking on the Open Skies policy adopted by the government , he said that airlines would be encouraged to operate in Sri Lanka and the government will not impose any limitations regarding the type of cargo they carry.

He also said that liberalization will be strictly monitored to avoid anti competitive practices. "We have already signed agreements on Open Skies Principles with UAE and Singapore. More agreements are in the pipeline and the implementation of these will enhance air traffic," he said.

The Minister also said that government would actively encourage training of cockpit and cabin crew to tap potential in newly emerging and expanding foreign airlines.

Chairman of the CAA, Shibly Aziz said that the authority will do its utmost to develop aviation and its related areas to compete with global markets. Aziz also said that his authority will continue to add innovative features to the aviation sector to make it more attractive and viable. All our major developments on aviation will have a positive impact on the growth of tourism," he said.
