Vacancies for 15,000 security personnel

A salary increase of Rs. 1,000 is likely to be implemented for security personnel working in private security agencies in the near future on the advice of the Chairman Wages Board Mahinda Madigahewa.

The Wages Board reviews the salaries of private security service once in three years and Rs. 800 was increased after the review held in March 2000. This time the Board increased it upto Rs. 1,000 on the recommendations by the Industrial Security Foundation (ISF).

Secretary ISF Ajith Jayasekara said that their recommendation was initially for Rs. 2090 from January 2004 to be on par with government servants salary increase announced in the Budget.

However, they are satisfied with what has been approved. Jayasekara hopes that the reluctance of unemployed youth to join security companies due to the poor salary would reduce to some extent when this is implemented.

At present there are 65,000 men and women employed in security companies. But there are still 15,000 vacancies Jayasekara said.

Meanwhile the duration given to the public by the Wages Board gazette notification to submit objections against the salary increase if any lapsed at 12 noon on January 9. Sources said that there were only about five objections from small security companies.

The Interior Ministry has stopped issuing renewal and registration certificates to private security companies who failed to pay EPF and ETF to their employees as another measure taken for the benefit of security personnel. Additional Secretary to the Interior Ministry S. Wiritamulla said this arrangement was made in keeping with an agreement with the Commissioner General of Labour recently.

He said that there were only 202 security companies registered under the Interior Ministry although over 500 companies are operating islandwide.

Various malpractices in the trade have stopped mushroom security companies registering under the ministry as required by law. However the ministry is drawing up a scheme to take action against companies who don't possess registration certificates.

According to the new agreement renewal of registration certificates will be issued only if they submit a clearance certificate from the Commissioner General of Labour.
