Ex-Pakistan navy chief convicted of corruption KARACHI, Friday (AFP) A Pakistani anti-corruption court sentenced former naval chief retired admiral Mansoor-ul- Haq to seven years hard labour for graft, court officials said. Judge Parkash Lal Ambvani also sentenced a former director of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), Mirza Ashafq Baig, to seven years imprisonment. He ordered them to pay a fine of two million rupees (about 35,000 dollars) each. Another accused, rear admiral Javed Ali, was sentenced to three years in absentia in the case, which was registered against them in 1994. The prosecution said the accused "misused their authority, and dishonestly or fraudulently caused huge loss to the PNSC" by approving a deal for the purchase of three ships at much higher than the prevailing market price. |
