Episcopal Ordination and installation of Very Rev. Msgr Norbert M. Andradi OMI

The Episcopal Ordination of Very Rev. Msgr. Norbert M. Andradi OMI as the new Bishop of Anuradhapura and the Canonical installation will be on January 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Anuradhapura. The Episcopal Ordination will be conferred by Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis, the Archbishop of Colombo and assisted by Rt. Rev. Dr. Frank Marcus Fernando, the Bishop of Chilaw and Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph, the Bishop of Mannar.

The homily in Sinhala and Tamil will be given by Rt. Rev. Dr. Vianney Fernando, the Bishop of Kandy and Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Savundaranayagam, the Bishop of Jaffna. All the Catholic Bishops of Sri Lanka will participate in this solemn occasion. His Excellency, the Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Yeh, the Apostolic Nuncio will also be present.

The Venerable Maha Sangha, other religious dignitaries, members of the North Central Provincial Council and Pradeshiya Sabha and other representatives of Government will grace the occasion.

His Holiness Pope John Paul II has appointed Very Rev. Msgr. Norbert M. Andradi OMI as the new Bishop for the Diocese of Anuradhapura on Friday, November 14, 2003. Fr. Norbert M. Andradi succeeds Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis who was the Bishop of Anuradhapura. The vacancy was created as Bishop Oswald Gomis assumed office as the new Archbishop of Colombo when Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando tendered his resignation as the Archbishop of Colombo.

He is the second son of late Mr. Don Anthony Andradi and Mrs. Dona Anna Madappuli from the parish of Katukurunda (Kalamulla). He had his primary education at the Kalamulla R.C. Boys' School up to grade five and was a student of the Holy Cross College from 1960 till he reached the HSC form. Fr. Norbert lost his father during his college days, when he was just 13.

He received his First Holy Communion in 1957. He left college at the end of year 1967 to enter the Oblate Minor Seminary in Kohuwela in 1968. From Kohuwela Minor Seminary he proceeded to the National Seminary in Kandy in September, 1970.

Having successfully completed his Philosophical Studies, there, he entered the Oblate Novitiate in Bandarawela on 03 September, 1973 and made his oblation on 8 September, 1974.

In October, 1975 Brother Norbert was sent to the Gregorian University in Rome where he obtained a Licentiate (STL) in Theology specializing in Fundamental Theology. Brother Norbert made his final commitment on 30 March, 1978 and was ordained a Deacon on 04, May the same year in Rome. Deacon Norbert after his return to Sri Lanka served in the missionary parishes of Nikaweratiya and Galgamuwa.

He was ordained to the Ministerial Priesthood by His Grace, the Archbishop Emeritus Most Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando on 10 May, 1980 in his home parish and that was the first ever Ordination ceremony that was held at the Kalamulla Church of Infant Jesus. After his Priestly Ordination, Fr. Norbert was given Obedience to the Anuradhapura Parish of St. Joseph as Assistant Priest in June 1980. Having served there for a couple of years, Fr. Norbert was appointed as a member of the Formators' Team of the Kandy Oblate Scholasticate and the Academic Staff of the National Seminary.

In 1985 he was made the Secretary of the Oblate Justice and Peace Committee and in 1989 he was appointed as a member of the Provincial Congress Committee. In September 1989 Fr. Norbert left for Canada for his post graduate studies. While being a priest student there, he also served as a member of the Formators' Staff of St. Paul's University Seminary. In May 1995 he brilliantly defended his Doctoral Thesis, PhD. Having returned to Sri Lanka in 1995 he rejoined the Scholasticate Staff and resumed teaching at the National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka, Ampitiya.

He was elected to represent the Oblate Province of Sri Lanka as Delegate of the General Chapter in Rome in September, 1998. At the time of his nomination as the Bishop of Anuradhapura, Friday 14 November, 2003. Fr. Norbert was the Superior of the Oblate Scholasticate and had just relinquished his duties as the Dean of the Department of Theology.

He has been a member of the Administrative Council of the Oblate and had been the Acting Provincial on a couple of occasions.

"To be always a pilgrim with god's people" is the motto of the new Bishop. His Coat of Arms was designed by Rev. Fr. Anslem Cross, a member of the Staff at St. Joseph's College, Colombo 10.
