Hair flare and Clothes fare by Lou Ching Wong

by Prasad Abu Bakr

Lou Ching Wong

The designer who started off as a hairdresser quickly adjusted into his additional slot as a designer of clothes. Today he comfortably blends both of them into a perfect harmony sometimes reminding us that one is an integral part of the other.

Lou Ching forecasts trends and styles based on natural lines with not much fuss, lines that will highlight a woman's natural body construction rather than conceal its weak points. So it's going to be body perfect for anybody who wants to look in with the trends. For the daily wearer he suggests fabrics with a natural fibre construction. White and a range of pastels will still continue to rule the day while black, though may play importantly this year too will share its past glory with other vibrant shades which are numerous and wild, says Lou Ching.

He also places an accent on hair colouring to highlight cuts and styles which he thinks will feature a range of subtle and warm shades but which will necessarily suit and highlight Asian skin-tones. He feels that short cuts will toe a popular line among the working women enabling them to easily manage and maintain their hair.

Make-up will consist of a range in natural tones with light shades dabbed on to bring out the bone structure of the face accentuating on a firm jaw-line and the very fashionable high-cheekbones.

Lou Ching Wong has participated in many hair shows and demonstrations here and abroad and has been travelling extensively promoting a line of clothes that depict multi-cultural Sri Lankan influences specially designed by him. As a producer and choreographer Lou Ching has created a number of fashion shows and many beauty pageants here and abroad. Currently his collections are due to tour Malaysiya, Italy and Germany and plans are also under way for the designer to tour China, Pakistan and the Emirates by mid 2004. Besides presenting a line of clothes with a Sri Lankan identity Lou Ching sees these exercises as a major draw on tourism to our country.

A major fashion addict himself the designer sees no major upsetting trends at least during the first half of the year. However he anticipates a smooth sailing fashion flow, be it burrowed from the west or influenced by our own eastern styles and line. The designer who has evolved his own personal stamp when it comes to dressing-up for himself keeps a cut above image when appearing in public.

In trendy trouser suites or sarong-shirt combinations Lou Ching prefers to accessorise his out-fits in heavy fashion not withstanding outside influences or inspirations of other designers.

He has always carried a personal statement of style through his style of dressing. But he refuses to flaunt his personal preferences on his clients. Though giving them the right advice while taking into account their need to look good plays an important role when you design for others, Lou Ching has succeeded tremendously in orienting people in toeing the line with his thoughts when it comes to dressing-up, sometimes outrageously.
