K.A.W continues celluloid melody

Veteran film director K.A.W. Perera will make an alluring comeback to the celluloid world with his latest film "Sumedha" which is scheduled to screen shortly.

One of Sinhala cinema's versatile directors, KAW easily falls into the category of directors who chartered a new course for the Sinhala cinema with his ever-popular films.

His latest film revolves round a young musician - Mano - who is adored by a young woman Sumedha, who is kin awe of Mano's voice. They get married before long.

With the passage of time, Sumedha is driven by the needs to adjust herself to societal demands for showing off. Mano's voice which was cherished by Sumedha gets detached from her mind and the duo become totally indifferent to each other.

Their perceptions and attitudes also change during this time, making it more difficult for them to live together.

Mano who is unable to meet these developments and changes is in a quandary as to what he should do. Should he continue to live with Sumedha ?

The film's story, script and dialogue is by KAW himself.

The film stars Vasanthi Chathurani, Jayantha Bopearachchi, Roger Seneviratne, Rex Kodippili, Sarath Kotalawala, Susantha Chandramali and Chithra Liyanage.

"The plot of the film and the message we are going to convey are very important. That is what I follow in making films," KAW once said in an interview referring to his film making.

KAW marked his entry to the Sinhala cinema as a dialogue writer for Dr. Lester James Peries's epoch making film " Rekhawa" (1956) which brought him fame and an opportunity to co-direct "Pirimiyek Nisa" in 1960 and "Suhada Sohoyuro" in 1963.

His direction of "Senasuma Kothanada" for Somasiri Perera won him the prestigious Sarasaviya Award for the Best Film of the Year.

A special feature in his films was that the songs which had catchy melodies were never copied from Hindi films as was the common practice then. They were a unique blend of oriental and western music.

Naturally, KAW ranked among the popular film directors in the sixties. In all, he directed 26 films in his 50-year-long career.

Some of them are "Kapatikama" (1966), "Bicycle Hora" (1968), "Seeye Nottuwa",(1971) "Kathuru Muwath", (1971) "Lokuma Hinawa" (1972), "Duleeka" (1974), "Lasanda" (1974), "Wasana" (1976), "Janaka Saha Manju" (1978), "Higana Kolla" (1974), "Bangali Walalu" (1981), "Durga" (1988), "Dawala Pushpaya" (1994), "Maduri" (1996) and "Undaya" (2000).

A trip through time to swinging 70s

The "Annesley and Indrani in Concert " musical show, held at the BMICH a couple of weeks ago brought nostalgic memories to a large number of local music lovers who loved the songs of the 1970's.

It was a memorable evening for Annesely, Indrani as well as hundreds of other young and middle aged music lovers. The BMICH was packed to capacity.

Annesley Malawana and Indrani Perera singing at the show

Some of them who missed the very first show "Annesley and indrani", staged during the early part of this year were impatiently awaiting to have a glimpse of their singing idols back on stage after a long spell of nearly three decades.

Fans also enjoyed the music provided by the fabulous "Gypsies" and several fast hits sung by its leader Sunil Perera.

It was also an unforgettable day even to Vijaya Corea, one of the most popular comperes in the field of music even from the days pop music legend Clarence Wijewardana formed "Moonstones" in the late 60s. Vijaya was able to keep the whole show alive, recalling the memories of local groups and their songs with his sensational voice.

The four- hour show was a memorable one even to the very young crowd who danced to the tune of popular songs such as "Udarata Niliya", "Mango Nanda", "Kalumama" and other old hits.

While paying his personal tribute to fans for the encouragement given to them for conducting musical shows, Annesley promised to conduct "Stars of 70" and the "Super Golden Chimes Re-Union Concert" next year.
