by Sudarshana Perera

South Asia Gateway Terminals Pvt Ltd (SAGT) in a move to show Sri Lanka's expertise in shipping industry handled their largest under gantry "heavy lift" at its terminal in Colombo Port this week. The two heavy-lifts unloaded were two boilers each weighing over 54 tones. SCI-GAURAV of the Shipping Corporation of India on the ISE service berthed with the two heavy cargo.

"This successful operation shows that Sri Lanka's shipping industry is fully geared to face any challenge in handling loading and unloading of cargo and if we did not unload two boilers, the consignee had to dismantle and bring them to Sri Lanka," said General Manager - Marketing and Commercial South Asia Gateway Terminals Tissa Wickramasinghe.

"We were able to unload these two heavy lifts successfully using a quay-gantry-crane that had the required capacity to lift this cargo. He said that the terminal pre-planned the whole operation well ahead of the arrival of the vessel by carrying out a load test for the required weight with a test load and the discharging operation was then carried out meticulously and professionally by the SAGT personnel.
