Top Pakistani tailor stitches sherwani for Vajpayee KARACHI, Thursday (AFP) Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee enlisted one of Pakistan's most sought-after tailors to stitch him a pair of traditional 'sherwani' outfits during his landmark visit to Islamabad. Designer Ameer Adnan, based in Pakistan's most cosmopolitan city Karachi, began the month-long task of crafting the sherwani with traditional Kashmiri embroidery at the Indian premier's request. "Mr. Vajpayee's request came through Pakistani Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz during his visit," Adnan told AFP. The sherwani is a long coat popular among men on the subcontinent, especially bridegrooms. It has a button-down front and a split in the center. It was Adnan who designed the sherwani worn by Musharraf at the last attempt at bilateral talks with Vajpayee in the Indian city of Agra in July 2001. "I was thrilled when Mr. Aziz invited me for a special meeting with the Indian premier and my wife and I took the first available flight to Islamabad and met the Indian premier," he said. "Mr. Vajpayee said that founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also used to wear this attire." "While I was taking his neck measurement, Vajpayee desired that the collar be like the one former Pakistani premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto used to wear during his visit to India." Adnan said he and his wife Human were "really inspired by Mr. Vajpayee's sense of humour, sense of history and wit." Adnan hoped the next time Musharraf and Vajpayee meet they both don his exclusive sherwanis. |
