by Chris Dhambarage

In the past few years several Sri Lankan coaches have rendered their valuable services for the development of cricket in Bangladesh. Among them former St. Joseph's and Colts CC cricketer Carlton Bernadus has played a major role being associated with the Bangladesh Cricket Board for more than three years.

Carlton Bernadus is presently serving the Bangladesh Cricket Board for a further two years as its U-19 National Age Group Coach cum Co-ordinator of the Sri Lankan Age Group Coaches. He has the honour of working very closely with the Member Secretary for Development and is actively involved with the BCB's Development Committee.

He is also a co-opted member, assisting in the coaching department and tournament sector in conducting tournaments for all Age Groups for the development plan drawn up by the Development Committee.

Bernadus who is on a short holiday in Sri Lanka said that the arrival of former Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore has taken a major turn around in the game with several new ideas and changes taking place in the game.

The player contract system is one new thing which was introduced to Bangladesh cricket after the arrival of Dav Whatmore.

However all the groundwork and the foundation was laid by Carlton Bernadus and his team through a great amount of hard work and total commitment.

Some of the major development projects are the introduction of age group tournaments for U-13, 15, and 17- divisional level during his first year, decentralizing and broad basing the present under-13, 15, and 17 age group tournaments to district level and regional level during the second year.

In addition he also introduced the level-I cricket-coaching syllabus for the Bangladesh Cricket Board with the assistance of Sri Lankan coaching colleague Malcolm Perera who is a former Director of Coaching for the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

He also coordinated and conducted the level-I coaching course for coaches in Bangladesh, co-ordinated and conducted specialized coaching clinics for the BCB's development squads at various age groups.

He is presently - introducing the level-II Syllabus for the course to be conducted for cricket coaches in Bangladesh and is actively involved in administrative work under the BCB's Development sector such as co-ordinating and corresponding to organize specialized coaches, clinics and tours for Age groups. He was also the coach of the Bangladesh U-19 team that visited the Australian Cricket

Academy in Adelaide in October and November 2001.

Bernadus was the coach of the BCB's U-19 Development Squad that participated in the Challenge Trophy conducted by the BCB in the year 2002 and coach of the U 19 Development squad that participated in the Premier Limited Over Club Tournament 2003 conducted by BCB.

He also had the privilege to work and associate with the Pakistan Coach Javed Miandad, West Indies Coach Andy Roberts, MRF Head Coach T.A. Sekar and former South African Bob Wollmer.

Bernadus said that the Development Sector did not lie down to rest or sit back idle with the initiatives taken thinking that the foundation has been laid but reviewed the process from time to time which gathered momentum by the introduction of a five year development plan.

Initially it was started by appointing seven divisional coaches and a Deputy Director to overlook two divisions outside of Dhaka.

Based on the five year development plan cricketers were given exposure and trained at different academies and institutions namely - Australian Cricket Academy and the MRF Pace Foundation.

It has further sought assistance from countries like Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Australia and West Indies by introducing the BCB development squads to play in domestic competitions in these countries and in addition consented for their most promising young cricketers to train in the Academies in Australia, England, MCC and Sri Lanka in the near future.

In addition the British Council of Bangladesh has also come forward to finance and support some of the programs that has been initiated by the Development Sector of the Board.

It has also bonded with the high performance sector and game development sector of Cricket Australia with a flurry of youth programs, coach educational programs and further obtained the assistance of technical skilled knowledgeable personnel in biomechanics and sports medicine.
