'Golf challenge' Tourney:

Jeya Kumar knocks out Nandasena to enter finals

by Richard Dwight

Jeya Kumar, playing steady consistent golf in the inaugural 'Golf Challenge' tournament, now in its semi-final stages at the RCGC - stormed in style to create a major upset by defeating the veteran champion Nandasena Perera, who has never lost a match play tournament, within the last 15 years.

Earlier on Jeya Kumar beat Arumugam 3/2 in the quarter-final and later in the semi-final out played K. Nandasena Perera, the veteran pro-golfer, 3 times winner of Sri Lanka amateur championship.

Kumar having shot a 4 under par in the qualifying round proved his mettle by beating Nandasena 3/1 on the 17th hole. Kumar upstaged Rajok Amarapadma the Sri Lanka open champ who beat Anura Rohana 1 up on the 18th in the Quarter-final.

Anura Rohana beaten by 'Rojok' Amarapadma a third time in as many meetings and does not do much good to his reputation as the only Sri Lankan pro golfer on the Asian professional golf circuit currently.

However Anura Rohana did considerably well last year on the Asian scene and this golf challenge proves to produce future prospects for Sri Lanka in the shape of Rajok, Lalith Kumara and J.J. Kumar.
