News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | SWRD's services still fresh in people's minds: Mahinda by Anura Maitipe The 105th birth anniversary commemoration of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike was held yesterday before the Bandaranaike statue at Galle Face attended by a large gathering of politicians, party supporters and intellectuals. Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse delivering the keynote address said: "People have been commemorating late Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike for the last several decades because of his great service to the country and it lingers in the minds of people for ever. "Following his untimely death, late leader Sirimavo Bandaranaike strengthened the party and its policies to meet the vision of the people of this country. These policies would be further carried forward by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga". SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena addressing the gathering said: "The late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike governed the country only for a three years, but his memory still lingers in the hearts and minds of the people. There were many other leaders who ruled the country for decades but public memory on them is very short". Religious observances were made by the Ven. Matale Amarawansa Thera. The Maha Sangha was received by the head of the Pali and Sanskrit Unit of the Kelaniya University Ven. Iddamaliya Indrasara Thera. Chief organiser of the Bandaranaike Commemoration Committee Governor Western Province Alavi Mowlana, PA General Secretary D. M. Jayaratne, Parliamantarian Nimal Siripala de Silva, Chief Minister North Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayake, Chief Minister North Western Province S. B. Navinna, Chairman ANCL Kesarralal Gunasekera and other politicians and party supporters participated. |
